The United Nations' special envoy for Yemen has called on Iran to keep supporting the world body in its efforts towards advancing a peace process in Yemen.

Hans Grundberg made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the Omani capital of Muscat on Monday.

Grundberg briefed Araghchi on Yemen’s latest developments and called for the continuation of Tehran’s support for the UN efforts aimed at improving conditions and pushing forward the peace process in the conflict-ridden country.

Araghchi, for his part, condemned Israel’s acts of aggression against regional countries, along with the ongoing blockade and sanctions against Yemen.

He also warned that the Zionist regime’s violations could lead to more insecurity and instability in the region.

For more than a decade, Yemen has been gripped by conflict involving the popular Ansarullah resistance movement, as well as militants supported separately by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Saudi Arabia waged a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015, but it failed to reinstall a Riyadh-friendly regime there. In 2022, the kingdom agreed to a ceasefire with Ansarullah, which has been running state affairs in the absence of a functional government in Sana'a.

Years of war plunged Yemen into a deep humanitarian crisis. The situation worsened further in the past two years after Israel and the US launched deadly aerial assaults across Yemen in flagrant breach of international law.

The attacks are meant to hamper the pro-Palestine campaign that Yemen launched in November 2023, a month after Israel unleashed a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Araghchi warns of US unilateralism

Additionally, on Monday, the top Iranian diplomat met in Muscat with David Harland, executive director of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Geneva-based private diplomacy organization.

During the meeting, Araghchi referred to the tense global situation, including in West Asia, caused by the US’s unilateralism and the Israeli attacks and crimes against regional nations.

Harland, in turn, underlined the importance of strengthening diplomacy as the only effective tool for peacebuilding and resolving disputes.

He further urged all governments and the international civil society to take action to protect peace, the rule of law, and the achievements of human civilization.

Meanwhile, the two sides discussed global developments, particularly the threats posed to peace and security amid flagrant violations of international law and the UN Charter.

Araghchi has travelled to the Omani capital to participate in the Muscat Forum and outline Iran’s positions and views on regional issues.
