3rd round of nuclear talks opens in Geneva; Iran’s proposal seen as ‘test’ of US sincerity

The Iranian delegation to the third round of indirect nuclear talks with the United States has reportedly put forward a proposal that would eliminate all of Washington's pretexts regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear program.

If rejected by the White House, the US move would reinforce suspicions in Tehran that Washington is not serious about diplomacy and that its diplomatic posture is merely a "game," IRNA reported on Thursday.

The Iranian and American negotiators are holding a third round of indirect talks at Oman's embassy in the Swiss city of Geneva on Thursday about the Islamic Republic’s peaceful nuclear program.

Oman also mediated the previous two rounds of talks between Iran and the US, which were held in Muscat and Geneva earlier this month following efforts by regional countries to avert a military confrontation.

IRNA reported that Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi presented Iran’s proposal to the US side, though no details of its contents have officially been disclosed.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Geneva on Wednesday, leads the Iranian delegation attending Thursday’s nuclear talks. The American side is led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Ahead of the talks, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and the Omani foreign minister met to discuss technical issues related to Iran’s nuclear program.

During a 90-minute meeting with his Omani counterpart on Wednesday, Araghchi outlined Iran’s positions and considerations regarding a potential agreement with the United States on sanctions relief and nuclear issues.

He said some media outlets had previously reported on the supposed terms of a potential agreement, but described those reports as unreliable and mere media speculation.

He added that circles affiliated with the Israeli regime, as well as hawks in Washington, have openly circulated speculation in an effort to influence American policymakers.

Speaking to the IRIB in Geneva on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Iranian negotiators entered the talks with full readiness and seriousness.

He said the Iranian delegation includes experts and specialists in nuclear issues, sanctions relief, legal matters, and economic affairs. “We are fully prepared and committed to continue the talks for as long as necessary,” he added.

Pezeshkian says ‘encouraging' signal received in US talks but Iran ready for any scenario

In a post on his X account on Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed an “encouraging” signal in indirect talks with the United States while expressing the country’s readiness for “any potential scenario.”

“Recent negotiations [with the US] involved the exchange of practical proposals and yielded encouraging signals,” Pezeshkian said.
