One of the most significant arenas in which authentic Islamic thought confronted reactionary dogmatism was the issue of women's rights and their participation in society.
At a time when some, driven by narrow-minded interpretations, sought to marginalize women or impose excessive and unwarranted forms of gender segregation, Imam Khomeini, drawing upon a dynamic and principled understanding of Islamic jurisprudence, firmly opposed such regressive measures.
His leadership prevented the implementation of policies that would have restricted women's rightful role in public life.
His example demonstrates that safeguarding the dignity and honor of women is fundamentally incompatible with arbitrary, reactionary restrictions imposed in the name of religion.
