Imam Khomeini led believers towards the path to spiritual purification

Imam Khomeini teaches that spiritual purification begins with sincere reflection and firm determination to change one’s life. A believer must resolve to abandon sin, fulfil religious obligations, make amends for past shortcomings, and follow the example of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). True spiritual growth requires not only inner sincerity but also steadfast adherence to the teachings of Islam, continuous self-discipline, and reliance upon God’s mercy and guidance.

Imam Khomeini explains through his famous work “an exposition on Forty Hadith” that after contemplation and reflection, the next stage of spiritual development is firm resolution. This means making a sincere commitment to purify one’s life from sin, fulfil all obligatory duties (wājibāt), compensate for past shortcomings, and live according to the principles of reason and religion.

A believer should strive to model his conduct on the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), following his noble example in manners, actions, choices, and abstentions.

Imam Khomeini emphasizes that spiritual perfection cannot be attained by neglecting the outward teachings of Islam. A person must become acquainted with the laws of the Sharī‘ah and observe them faithfully. Through obedience to God and adherence to His commands, the heart becomes receptive to divine knowledge, spiritual wisdom, and deeper understanding of the sacred law.

True inner purification, therefore, does not diminish one’s commitment to religious obligations; rather, it deepens it. The further a believer progresses spiritually, the more sincerely and faithfully he should practise the teachings of Islam.

Imam Khomeini also urges the believer to cultivate a strong will and firm determination, warning against leaving this world in a state of spiritual weakness and indecision.

He explains that persistent indulgence in sin gradually weakens the human will and undermines the noble qualities that distinguish a human being. The struggle against the self (jihād al-nafs) is therefore essential to spiritual growth. A believer must resist sinful desires, abandon destructive habits, and resolve sincerely to return to God.

This journey requires self-discipline, repentance, perseverance, and constant vigilance. Believers should seek the company of the righteous, devote time to private supplication, and ask God for assistance in overcoming their weaknesses. They should also pray for the intercession of the Holy Prophet and his purified Household (peace be upon them all).

Imam Khomeini reminds us that the journey of life is filled with spiritual trials and dangers. A person may fall into pitfalls from which recovery becomes exceedingly difficult. For this reason, one must never become complacent about one’s spiritual condition or postpone repentance. Instead, one should remain humble, vigilant, and steadfast in the pursuit of purification.

Imam Khomeini’s advice reminds us that spiritual purification begins with awareness, advances through firm resolution, and is sustained by action. Sincere intention must be translated into obedience to God, resistance to sinful desires, repentance for past mistakes, and continuous refinement of one’s character.

The believer’s task is not merely to seek inner spiritual experiences, but to transform both the inner self and outward conduct in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Through perseverance, self-discipline, and reliance upon divine mercy, one can progress towards a life of greater righteousness, spiritual awareness, and closeness to God.
