Ayatollah Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Imam Khomeini, said in a message that the fatal stampede reflects the incapability and mismanagement of the Saudi monarchy, while rules over the kingdom.
The great Muslim scholar also extended his condolences to Muslims and the bereaved families of the victims over the deadly tragedy, which he said has brought grief upon the Islamic world, and hoped that those injured in the incident would recover soon.
Some 2,000 Hajj pilgrims reportedly lost their lives in a stampede that took place near the holy city of Mecca, with hundreds of others injured or missing.
